Biscotti’s were first invented in the 14th century in Prato, Tuscany, Italy. They were made from almonds as they were incredibly common throughout Tuscany. Their name comes from the Latin word biscostus, which translates to “twice baked”. They had gotten their name due to their baking process of being double baked to make sure all the moisture is out of the biscuit; it had made the biscuit hard and resistant mold.
Biscotti’s became popular with sailors as they set sail on long voyages, as they were durable from their hard texture and their longevity of a shelf life. Decades after their adventures with sailors, they had become a stable in Italian Courts during the Renaissance. They became popular sweet treats for their enjoyable texture and flavor. They were often gifted within families of nobility and royalty.
Biscotti’s often are paired with coffee, tea, or even some wine! Biscotti’s are perfect for any time of day due to their yummy pairings, from breakfast, snacks, and even desserts! For snack time, they can often be found on charcuterie boards, as they pair well with different kinds of cheese and fruits. The desserts can range from dipping them into sweet sauces (such as caramel and chocolate) to being crumbled on top of ice cream.
As centuries have passed, people have begun to explore the intricate flavors and different combinations of biscotti. Over some research, we have decided that the most common flavors of biscotti include: The Classic Almond, Cranberry White Chocolate, Mocha Toffee, Double Chocolate, Lemon Anise, and Cranberry Pistachio. People seem to love the different palettes fluctuating between chocolate to fruity to nutty.
